Oldie But Goodie: Anolis on the Cover of National Geographic

Lot of talk on this site about the deserved prevalence of anoles on the cover of major periodicals (most recently here). I thought it might be useful to remember what I consider to be the greatest anole cover of all time. The answer, incidentally, is “no.” And the species? Anolis garmani from Jamaica.

  1. I caught this lizard for the National Geographic photographer at the Discovery Bay Marine Lab. I could probably write a few posts about my interactions with this photographer, but I’ll just mention here the fact that he proposed taking a photograph with this lizard attached to my nipple (I declined).

Might that be the reason why the Anole has a rather dissapointed look?
It would be interesting to read those posts..:)

  3. We could also have a series of posts about photos Rich did NOT decline. But that might seriously hurt the reputation of AA so I think that it will be also wise to steer clear of this option.

When I sit on my porch in central Florida , I have many anoles around. When I make a slight sucking sound through my teeth , they all run towards me and the males display and bob. Do they make sounds to communicate?
