How Many Introduced Brown Anoles Can You Find?

IMG_0307xsmallerTo acknowledge, if not celebrate, the news that Anolis sagrei has become established on the Honduran Bay Island of Utila–which harbors three native species–we present this photograph of the first place that the species was discovered, a vacant lot in the middle of town. As you can see if inspect the photo, the introduction has been quite successful. But just how successful? How many brown anoles can you spot?

  1. Hmmm!! At a first glance, five, perhaps a sixth one (a very cryptic one on the tree trunk).

  2. Kevin de Queiroz

    I see at least 13; possibly 14.

  3. I could not find 13 or 14, but I did find 10 or 11 (with only the one on the far left of the picture being questionable in my mind). Spoiler alert: my (partial) solution is here. – Liam

  4. I came to the same conclusion as Liam, but couldn’t convince myself that the blotch to the far left was, in fact, a lizard. How appropriate that they are all in the debris pile and not the lush green vegetation.

  5. Martijn van de Schoot

I found 14 as well, with one or two doubtfull… After a bit of searching you really think you see them everywhere.

  6. Rafael Moreno

    I found another…

  7. Kevin de Queiroz

My 14 differs from Martin’s by one. I didn’t consider the one farthest to the right in his assessment to be a lizard, but I had a different doubtful one (upper leftmost in the attached photo). I also missed the one found by Rafael, which brings the total to at least 14, with a possibility of 16.

  8. I concede. Turns out I’m just as bad at looking for anoles in photographic form as I am in real life….

  9. Ramon E. Martinez-Grimaldo

    first, I only saw eight

All very well, but cans and bottles clogged my view, I counted nearly 20 of this invasive species..
